About

The animal news platform The Animal Reader started as a passion project by Prya Bisambhar, a journalist based in the Netherlands. With twenty years of experience in journalism, Prya noticed a significant difference in how news stories report on humans versus animals.

“A few years ago, there was a news article about a stable fire where thousands of chickens died horribly. The article focused on the farmer, his financial loss, and how difficult it was for him. The animals were just a number.”

In news stories, animals are always considered less important than humans. But news stories impact the way people think. If animal suffering is not news, but only human suffering is, humans will believe that animals are less important.

News organizations need to start making animals part of their stories. If this doesn’t happen, our empathy towards animals will decrease.

During COVID, Prya started The Animal Reader, a news platform focusing on animals. “I believe in the power of inclusive storytelling – this means animals are also important characters in our stories, just like people. Their stories are part of our world too.”

Mission

The Animal Reader is an independent news platform reporting global animal-related issues. From stray animals, endangered species to conservation efforts, we highlight the profound impact of human activities on animals.

Since 1970, human actions have led to a 70% decline in animal populations. This crisis is more than just a statistic—it’s a call to action. At The Animal Reader, our mission is to inform, raise awareness, and inspire meaningful conversations that drive change for animals worldwide.

Belief

The Animal Reader believes in a world where humans, animals, and nature coexist in harmony. Our core belief is simple: recognizing the impact of human actions on animals is essential for the health of our planet.

Caring for animals and recognizing their role in our world is a crucial step toward solving the climate crisis. When people develop empathy for animals, they naturally become more aware of and invested in protecting the environment.

“If people care more about animals, they’ll care more about the environment. Protecting animals is protecting our planet.”

Funding and Support

The Animal Reader is fully funded by Prya, with support from the community through contributions on Donorbox.

“I’m looking to grow the site and make it sustainable, with plans to collaborate with freelancers. The site has recently started running Google ads and includes affiliate links as a test to explore revenue options.”
