Thousands of people have protested in Albania against plans to build a luxury resort in a nature area. The project is linked to Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of United States President Donald Trump.
The project is planned for a protected area in southern Albania that is home to flamingos and many other animals. Protesters say the development could damage one of the country’s most important natural habitats.
Demonstrators gathered for several days in the capital, Tirana, carrying pink flamingo cut-outs and signs calling for the project to be stopped. Some protesters also accused the government of putting private investment ahead of nature conservation.
Protected area home to thousands of birds
The proposed development includes luxury hotels, villas and apartments in the Vjosa-Narta area, a protected wetland ecosystem on Albania’s Adriatic coast. The project also includes plans for development on Sazan Island.
Environmental groups say the area is one of Albania‘s most valuable biodiversity hotspots. It is an important stopover for migratory birds travelling across Europe. Flamingos are among the most visible species that use the wetlands.
Conservation organisations fear that construction work, increased tourism and habitat loss could disturb wildlife and damage sensitive ecosystems. More than 40 environmental groups have called for the project to be suspended.
Bulldozers and fences trigger protests
Public anger grew after videos appeared online showing bulldozers working near the coast. Protesters also objected to fencing and barbed wire that blocked access to parts of the beach.
Critics say there has been a lack of transparency around the project. They question changes to Albanian law that removed restrictions on construction in protected areas in 2024. Authorities are now investigating aspects of the approval process and the funding behind the development.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has defended the project. He says it will bring major investment, jobs and tourism revenue to the country.
