Fireworks cause fear and missing pets in the Netherlands

Fireworks caused fear, injuries, and missing pets in the Netherlands during the recent New Year celebrations, according to the Dutch animal protection organisation Dierenbescherming.

The organisation looks back on the New Year period with mixed feelings. While this may have been the last year that consumers were allowed to use fireworks, the celebrations once again led to many reports of animal suffering.

Hundreds of reports during the New Year

The national animal welfare hotline received 309 reports on 31 December and 1 January. These reports included missing pets, injured animals, and other animal-related incidents.

Of these reports, 34 were made during New Year’s night itself. This is a small increase compared to last year. Animal ambulances were called out more than 150 times to help animals in need.

Pets panicked by fireworks

In December, the hotline received many reports about animals who ran away after being frightened by fireworks. In total, 35 dogs and 4 cats were reported missing during this period. About half of these animals have since been found.

In one case, a dog became so frightened by fireworks that he ran away, was hit by a car, and later died from his injuries.

Impact on animals

Research shows three out of four cats and two out of three dogs are afraid of fireworks. Loud explosions can cause panic, stress, and dangerous behaviour such as running away or injuring themselves.

Wild animals are also affected. Birds, hedgehogs, and other wildlife can suffer extreme stress from loud noises. In some cases, this stress can be fatal.

Hope for a fireworks ban

The Dierenbescherming has long called for a national ban on consumer fireworks, mainly because of the impact on animal welfare. The organisation hopes the planned fireworks ban will finally come into effect.

Animal welfare groups say reducing or banning fireworks would help protect pets and wildlife and prevent many of the injuries and deaths seen every year during New Year celebrations.
