Seal pup rescued from illegal rave undergoes emergency surgery

A very young seal pup who was recently found at an illegal rave in a nature reserve in the Netherlands had to undergo emergency surgery.

Two weeks ago, police broke up an illegal rave near Groningen around 3 AM. Around 150 partygoers were spotted across the area. As police shut off the music and cleared the area, they spotted the pup near some cars.

Volunteers from the Zeehondencentrum Pieterburen arrived to care for the animal.

They suspected that the pup and her mother had been resting on land after coming from the Wadden Sea. However, the loud music probably frightened the mother, leaving the pup orphaned.

The seal pup was smaller than average but in good health. But she still had her umbilical cord attached when she was rescued.

Umbilical hernia

On Friday afternoon, staff discovered the pup had developed a severe umbilical hernia. The opening in her abdominal wall had worsened, and a piece of tissue began poking through the opening. This can be life-threatening for such a tiny animal.

Veterinary surgeon Ana Rubio Garcia and her team performed a delicate operation. The pup was anesthetized, the damaged tissue removed, and the healthy tissue carefully placed back inside. Fortunately, no internal organs were affected.

Because of the pup’s young age, veterinarians describe the situation as particularly risky. The team has started treating her with pain relief and anti-infection medication.

The centre now hopes the little seal will fully recover and one day return to the Wadden Sea.
