A stray dog in Lebanon rescued a newborn baby girl abandoned in a trash bag in Tripoli. The dog managed to protect the baby, who was left in an area known for its many stray animals.

A passerby noticed the dog carrying the bag and heard cries, Arab News reported. The baby, bruised and believed to be only a few hours old, was immediately rushed to a local hospital in Tripoli.

The child is described as being in a “serious but stable” condition. No additional information about her health and the circumstances of her abandonment have been provided.

Images believed to be of the injured baby have surfaced on social media, resulting in an outpouring of sympathy from the online community. At the same time, the stray dog’s heroic act has been met with an outpouring of praise, with social media users recognizing the animal’s empathy and intelligence in stark contrast to the inhuman act of the baby’s abandoner.

“The dog who carried her was more humane compared to the person who threw her,” Lebanese journalist Ghassan Rifi, based in Tripoli, said on Twitter.

Authorities are currently investigating the incident. In the meantime, plans are in place to put the baby in an orphanage unless a potential adoptive family comes forward.
