The decomposing body of a sperm whale washed up on the shore of Jaffa Bay in Tel Aviv on Friday. The Israeli marine wildlife organization Delphis said on Facebook that the whale was a young female of about ten meters long.
Researchers took samples from the body to determine the cause of death but added that it would be difficult to find the exact cause because of her decomposed body.
A 2019 report by the Cetacean Specialist Group, a network of experts on endangered species, estimated the number of Mediterranean sperm whales to be in the low hundreds. The group blamed fishing nets for the depopulation.
