Fourteen horses died in a fire in a stable Thursday night near the village of Koningslust in the Netherlands. The horses were locked inside the barn when the fire started and couldn’t escape.

Firefighters responded to the fire at the barn around 7 pm. Because the fire spread quickly through the hay, they could not save the horses.

Fire brigades from neighbouring villages were called to help control the fire. According to local media, ten horses died from the fire, and veterinarians euthanized four because they were severely injured.

Fifteen horses in another stable near the fire were unharmed. It’s not known what caused the fire.
