People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) named American singer and songwriter Billie Eilish 2021’s Person of the Year. She is the youngest winner of the yearly award, previously won by Oprah Winfrey, Pope Francis and Joaquin Phoenix, among others.

Eilish grew up vegetarian but went vegan in 2014 after learning about the harsh truths of the dairy and meat industries. The Grammy-winning artist has also been publicly advocating and working to help animals. She recently asked her followers to skip making turkey at Thanksgiving, saying that the animals are incredibly gentle.

Eilish recently teamed up with sports brand Nike to create vegan Air Jordans, sneakers that are 100% vegan and partly made from recycled materials. In November, she released her own perfume, named Eilish, free of animal-derived ingredients and animal testing.

“Billie Eilish is making sure that the party’s over for meaty, milky meals as well as for leather, fur, and silk,” PETA’s president Ingrid Newkirk said. She added that PETA is grateful to her for continuing to emphasize how vegan fashion and food are better for animals and the planet.

PETA is the largest animal rights organization in the world, with more than 9 million members and supporters all over the world. Their slogan reads “animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way.”
