A German tourist has been arrested for killing his dog with a hammer in Croatia, police said Tuesday. The 51-year-old man was arrested in the northern port of Rijeka.

Police said in a statement that he allegedly killed his dog by hitting him in the head with the hammer in a yard of a building during the weekend.

The German man was under the influence of alcohol and possessed several grams of the drugs ketamine, the statement added.

The man was on vacation in Croatia, a police spokeswoman told AFP. After he was arrested, he damaged equipment and furniture at the police station.

The man is charged with killing and torturing an animal, a crime for which he can get up to a year in prison in Croatia. The man was also charged with property damage and drug abuse.
