Huge dead whale, one of Mediterranean largest, found near Naples

Italian coastguard discovered the body of a dead whale near the coast of Naples after they followed a young whale in distress. “Probably one of the largest” ever found in the Mediterranean, the coastguard said.

Coastguard scuba divers found the body of the lifeless whale on Sunday after spotting a whale calf in difficulty near the harbor of Sorrento, a coastal town that overlooks the Naples bay. The calf has since disappeared into the sea.

The body of the whale surfaced and was towed toward the Naples harbor by two coastguard vessels on Wednesday. A post-mortem will be carried out to investigate the cause of death.

Coastguard members continue to monitor for any more sightings of the calf, who they haven’t seen since anymore since discovering the dead whale.
