The Vegetarian Butcher created the plant-based patty for the Rebel Whopper that is available as of today in Burger Kings in Europe. The veggie burger is being sold in 2500 stores across 25 European countries.

David Shear, president of Burger King EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa), commented: “We are confident that the Rebel Whopper is the sandwich everyone has been waiting for and provides the ultimate plant-based patty alternative with the iconic Whopper build.”

Biggest butcher in the world
Jaap Korteweg, the founder of the Dutch company The Vegetarian Butcher, said about the deal: “When I started The Vegetarian Butcher nine years ago, my goal was to be the biggest butcher in the world. To create products for meat lovers, with the ambition of providing the same taste and experience, but plant-based. Working with Burger King on the Rebel Whopper has been amazing, and we can’t wait for all Burger King guests to enjoy it.”

At the end of October, Burger King had already announced they would come with two vegetarian burgers to Europe. Less than two weeks later, they’re selling them at multiple locations.

The patty of the Rebel Burger is plant-based, but the burger itself is not vegan. It comes with mayonnaise, which contains egg.
